Custom Boards
Custom boards are built to your exact personal specifications. I have been building custom boards for more than 30 years now and the key to the art of building a custom board is being able to interpret what the the customer really needs. This involves interpreting the customers surfing ability, style of surfing, what sort of waves the board's is needed for and what sort of board(s) the customer has been previously riding. Some customers know exactly what they need, while others need my advice in getting the board right for their specific requirements. Sometimes i will direct the customer to something completely different than what they were considering. This has often been the case with the new generation twin keel fishes.
When I design a custom surfboard for someone I draw on my 35 years of surfing experience of riding all sorts of waves all over the world. I also refer to my years of observing other surfers and what they do or attempt to do on wave. I've only just realised it recently but i seem to have got pretty good at interpreting customer requirements and my recent success at building boards to fit my customers needs is close to 100%. And really, I suppose it should be....i've been doing it long enough!
When we build a custom board we often have to source a particular blank with a specific rocker and stringer glue up. I then need to design a unique cutting file for the board and send the order through to the cutting machine for the blank to be cut. Once the blank gets to the factory it then needs to be hand finished, sprayed or tinted and then laminated, finned and finished to it's particular requirements. It take the same time to oversee the production of one custom board as it does to oversee the production of 20 stock boards. This is why we have a $100 custom charge for custom boards. They take more time and it's built specifically for you
See ya!
