There's a number of great reasons why mid length boards have become so popular. But I'd say the main one is that they just make surfing fun, especially in smaller and lower quality waves.
Having the glide, stability and paddle power of a longboard, but with the ease of turning and response of a much shorter board, is a very addictive combination.
I remember my first surf on our team rider, Julia Sullivan's board up the top of the reef at Uluwatu. I was stunned at just how easy to was to catch waves, and just how much fun it was, gliding across the open faces.
